Abstract
Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” has been read as a story of a premeditated crime, of revenge and the protagonist’s ultimate pride in his well-executed crime. Readers are repulsed by the sheer evil of Montresor, the main character of the story. However, this paper argues that this reading barely scratches the surface of the depth and complexity of this story. It argues that the story is told in the form of a confession. The narrator, an elderly Montresor, is full of remorse, and in telling the story, he is seeking absolution. In its deeper meaning, “The Cask of Amontillado” is about death as the inescapable biological trap. This paper argues that the story is about death as the great antagonist of the text.

الملخص
عادةًً ما تُُقرأ عبر كوةِِ سياقِِ قصةِِ جريمةٍٍ متعمدةٍٍ جرت على منوالِِ سبقٍٍ وترصدٍٍ؛ وهي في حالتها » برميل أمونتيلادو « يصح القول بأنََّ قصةََ بو تلك تحملُُ في تلافيفها مشاعرََ الانتقامِِ والزهوِِّ المطل قِِ الذي يتلبََّسُُ بطلََ الروايةِِ إزاء جريمته المنفََّذةِِ بإحكامٍٍ. وعطفًًا على هذا، فإن الشعورََ الذي يكاد يُُطب ق على القراء هو النظرُُ شزرًًا ومقتًًا لأفعا ل مونتريسور- الشخصية الرئيسة في القصة-والتي بدت باعتبارها خيرََ تمثّّلٍٍ للشرِِ المطل قِِ. يأتي هذا الإسهامُُ بالقولِِ بأنََّ هذه القراءةََ للقصةِِ لم تنفذْْ إلى عمقِِ المسألةِِ محلِِ النقاشِِ؛ فالقصةُُ -كما تجادلُُ هذه الورقةُُ- صُُهرت عبر قالبِِ الاعتراف، حيث إن الرواي -مونتريسور- قد شاخََ وقّرّ عظمه ويشعر بالندم إزاء فعلته، وكانتْْ القصةُُ تكأتهُُ وسبيلهُُ لطلبِِ المغفرةِِ. تخلصُُ الورقةُُ عبر القولِِ بأنََّ القصةََ في عمقها تدور حول الموتِِ باعتباره ذلك الق رد المحتوم الذي لا مندوحة عنه، وعليه فإنََّ القصةََ بكليتها يصح صوغها بأنها لمْْ تكن إلا ضدًًا على الموتِِ بحسبه الغريمََ الأبرزََ.
